Founded in 1858 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, Cañon City's early history was marked by its role as a commercial center for mining in the region. By the 1860s, it had raised two companies of volunteers for the American Civil War and discovered oil, marking the site of the first commercial oil well west of the Mississippi River (Wikipedia). The late 19th century saw the establishment of smelters following the discovery of gold at Cripple Creek, further shaping the city's industrial landscape.
